My internship was located at an outpatient physical therapy clinic for Main Line Health in Broomall, along with a couple weeks at Bryn Mawr Hospital. In the beginning I did not know what to expect, but the therapists were very welcoming and I felt comfortable right away. I was responsible for assisting the physical therapists when they needed help with a patient along with preparing the patient with hot packs or getting them set up on a piece of equipment. I was also allowed to work with some of the patients in assisting them perform their exercises. I was responsible for scheduling patients for their next appointments as well as answering the phone and calling insurance companies to verify benefits. This was a learning experience for me because the therapists I was working with were always calling me over to show me something with their patient and also enlightening me on things that they thought I would benefit from. I could tell they enjoyed sharing their passion with someone who is wanting to join their career. The therapists would let me read a patients chart to see what they consisted of and show me different abbreviations that therapists use when recording exercises. I learned that every therapist does their job differently so it was nice to observe different therapists. After completing this internship, I am confident that physical therapy is what I want to pursue my career in. |
